What makes a salesperson stay with an employer?

Salary and commission matter of course. But I don’t think it’s usually the whole story.

I speak with field salespeople every day, and when you strip it back the things that make the biggest difference are often quite simple:

• Feeling valued and trusted
• Having a good relationship with their manager
• Being given the autonomy to manage their territory
• Having realistic targets and expectations
• Seeing opportunities to progress
• Having a sensible work-life balance

You can offer all the money and all the perks in the world, but it won’t make up for someone feeling undervalued, micromanaged or unable to see a future with the business.

And when good salespeople do leave, salary often isn’t the real reason. It’s just the easiest one to give.

What would keep you with a business for the long term?
